Formal and non-formal education have different objectives and approaches. Formal education in schools is based on state-regulated curricula that focus on the transmission of academic knowledge. Non-formal education, on the other hand, is about learning that is oriented towards the student’s personal interests and abilities, and that takes place through hands-on experiences, clubs or other extra-curricular activities helping students to get to know themselves better and to develop important competences.
We strongly believe that a comprehensive education, rather than one focused on a specific field and academic knowledge alone, allows students to discover and develop their personal strengths and help them decide on their career path. This is why Saulės Gojus puts a strong emphasis on non-formal education. Non-formal education is organised here in the following two forms:
• The first is implemented by completing the curriculum of the pre-primary and primary educational levels with weekly theatre, aikido, chess and IT classes. Each of these activities develops important competences and skills in students, e. g., fostering of creativity, social skills, emotional and physical stamina, willpower and discipline, logical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• The second way of organising non-formal education at Saulės Gojus is by offering additional non-formal activities (clubs) after school for a separate fee, which students choose according to their individual needs and interests. They can take street dance, ceramics-art, ballet, aerobic gymnastics, indoor football, Aikido, karate, mindfulness, coding, or even explore the world of medicine and health. There are also foreign language classes in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.
